Turning Learning into Action®

Modern best practice learning and development activities are a very effective way to teach skills and knowledge.  But they have inherent limitations when it comes to securing long-term behavioural change.  Studies show only 10 to 20% of training is ever transferred effectively back to the workplace, resulting in a significant waste of training resources.

Vivat® set out to find an effective, easy-to-implement, time-efficient and cost-effective way for organisations to achieve the behavioural change component of learning.  The result is Turning Learning into Action®.

Turning Learning into Action® (TLA) adds accountability, structure and support to the learning process.  It is not wedded to any particular content, so is able to complement and boost the effectiveness of virtually all types of L & D programs.  It appeals to a wide range of personality styles, including those uncomfortable with and resistant to change.

Each participant in a TLA program is assigned a Vivat specialist.  Together they establish a schedule of convenient one-on-one telephone-based action sessions and work through the Vivat ACTION process.  Each conversation with his/her Vivat specialist concentrates on helping the participant achieve his/her goals.

ACTION

Accountability

The participant and his/her Vivat specialist work out an accountability structure for the implementation process.

Calibration

The participant calibrates his/her current performance and goals.

Target

He/she identifies his/her target – the result he/she wants to achieve.

Information

Using Information the participant and the Vivat specialist assess the participant’s starting point.

Options

Brainstorming techniques are used to develop options and opportunities to plan the way forward.

Next steps

The participant commits to taking the agreed next steps before the next ACTION session.

The discipline of the ACTION process promotes the desired behavioural change, building in each participant a sense of ownership of the change process, which is often lacking in even the most up-to-date accelerated learning activities.

Because it is client-driven, participants develop workable solutions based on the information and skills they learned through course work and from their individual thoughts and beliefs.

In the words of a TLA participant “I have done several management training programs. However, unless you are really disciplined it is difficult to apply key learning.  By having the coaching after the program it allows you to work through changes and adopt new behaviours.”  Contact Centre Manager, Apple Australia.
